CENTER STAGE with Jean Bell

Welcome to CENTER STAGE with Jean Bell!

Smile - that person behind the camera in that fabulous outfit capturing the moment at our dances is Jean Bell. Jean's family home is Washington D.C. However, Jean has made her home over the years in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Montana, Ohio, and Texas. But, she says, the most beautiful sunrise she experienced was a view from a cruise ship arriving in Miami in 1978 which caused her to want to retire in Florida 10 years ago.

Retirement in Jean's life means time to pursue her interests in reading, cooking, Bible studies, traveling (especially by way of cruises), spending plenty of time both with her son, who is a family physician at Duke University in Raleigh N.C., her two grandsons, ages 5 and 9, and, of course, to pursue her passion of dancing.

Jean began her involvement with dancing in 2004, a Ladies Latin Workout at Jerry Lawrence's Studio. She remained for the ballroom class that night by chance and was "hooked." It was the perfect combination of exercise, a ton of fun, a great social group excuse to buy, create and showcase dazzling dresses! At this time, Jean has acquired 15 "sparkly" dance costumes, a yellow dress being the current favorite, perhaps to be upstaged by her soon-to-be-debuted, re-worked, royal blue 1986 vintage gown. Jean says her love of the "bling" started in Junior High School with her mom and grandmother sharing the same interest.

Jean recently showcased six of her dresses at just one event, the July 2011 Mini Match in Ocala, her first competition. She competed in 10 heats and a Pro-Am showcase with her instructor, Jerry Lawrence.

Dancing has expanded many facets of life for Jean, including volunteering to be the videographer for our chapter, which she has been a member of since 2009.

Jean's favorite dances at the moment are Foxtrot and Waltz. Jean hopes one day to dance the Viennese Waltz in Vienna, Austria. Her quote for life is "If you never have a dream, you'll never have a dream come true." Take a look at Jean's dream place at We can't wait for a video of you dancing the Viennese Waltz in Vienna, Jean!
